This past weekend, a friend and I ventured out to Wangsiying Wholesale Flower Market Beijing in search of Christmas greenery and to have a general look-see. We had no idea what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised at the range of fresh cut flowers and plants!
What you'll find at the flower market
As expected, we found a warehouse full of fresh cut flowers of all types and colours, and we were pleasantly surprised to find an extensive range of very healthy potted plants and trees at this flower market in Beijing. There are also plant pots, fish and aquarium supplies, beautiful artificial flowers, ribbons, vases in all shapes and colours (glass and ceramic) and some Christmas decorations.
I was so excited by the potted plants I totally forgot to take photos of the garden section. And for me, that is really saying something!
Are there Christmas trees and decorations at the market?
My friend was on the look out for Poinsettia's. Unfortunately, we only saw two Poinsettias in the garden section, one pink and one red. We couldn't find any potted Christmas trees.
Out in the flower warehouse we spied a small shop in the back corner with Christmas lights hanging in the window. This shop had mountains of Christmas baubles and not a lot else. At the time we visited in mid-November, we may have been a little too early. Furthermore, it looked to still be in the midst of setting up so hopefully there will be more Christmas decorations soon.
Next to the bauble shop we found a refrigerated stall with a wide range of imported flowers including Australian Wattle and South African Proteas.
The refrigerated shop also sold small Christmas trees and wreaths (made by stapling live fir branches to a frame) and fresh fir tree branches that can be used to make Christmas boughs.
What are the prices like at the flower market?
The prices at the market are extremely reasonable. My daughter picked up a small succulent for 15RMB (Aus$3), and I bought a mature snake plant (Mother in Laws Tongue) for 25RMB (Aus$5). The pots were slightly more expensive but still a good price. A beautiful glazed white ceramic patterned pot with feet cost me 60RMB (Aus$12) and a smaller teal glazed pot cost me 20RMB (Aus$4).
In the fresh cut flower section we bought a big bunch of Australian Wattle branches (12 pieces) for 50RMB (Aus$10) and my friend bought a large clear glass vase for 20RMB (Aus$4).
I also bought six tropical fish for our aquarium that cost 15RMB (Aus$3) in total. All in all I would say the prices are very good.
Where is the Wangsiying Wholesale Flower Market in Beijing
You'll find the wholesale flower market at 568 Gaobeidian Road, Chaoyang. We entered through Gate 1. As you would expect the flower market is in a very industrial area. The closest subway stations are Jiaohua Chang and Shuanghe, on Line 7, and both stops are a 15 minute walk from the station to the market. Not ideal when you're lugging all your recent purchases home. I strongly recommend you get a car to take you there. In Didi enter 'Wangsiying Flower Wholesale' or see address card below in Mandarin.
When is the market open?
The market is open every day. Dianping notes it open from 6am - 5.30pm, however, Maps says from 10am to 6pm. You are required to show your Beijing Health Code and Green Arrow Travel Code at the gate to gain entry. Phone +86 152 0100 1027.
Will I go back to the Wangsiying Wholesale Flower Market?
Yes, definitely. We were a little bit rushed as it was late in the afternoon and the kids were getting antsy but I feel there is more to discover at this flower market so we've already made plans to go back without the kids.
The plants in the garden section are very healthy and furthermore, good value for money. The shops with the Christmas decorations were still setting up, so we may have been a little too early for Christmas (it was mid-November) so stay tuned for an update on this flower market. All in all, I would recommend a visit to this wholesale flower market in Beijing.
