On sunny days we love to wander through the beautifully manicured gardens of The Jing'an Sculpture Park, a favourite of many families, tourists and office workers out to soak up the sun during their lunch break. During the summer months, many people flock to the park in the early evening as the heat of the day starts to wane.

In addition to the permanent sculptures and statues displayed throughout the 7.5-acre green space, the park hosts exhibitions of international artist's sculptures usually installed for 3 to 4 months at a time.

The park is also home to another family favourite, the Shanghai Natural History Museum which is a must-see during your visit to Shanghai.

Each year in Spring people flock to the sculpture park to see the stunning tulip display and the Peach Blossoms in bloom.

One of the many things I love to see when visiting the parks in and around Shanghai is the locals coming together to exercise. If you visit the park in the morning, you will likely see people practicing Tai Chi, and after the sun goes down expect to see more upbeat exercising with people shaking their salsa moves, ballroom dancing and line dancing.

The sculptures and art installations throughout the park change every few months so whether you're in Shanghai for a short visit or a long stay, there is always something new to see each time you visit.

Pro-tips:

  • The main area of the park can be very busy, so if you're looking for a quieter spot to escape to, walk toward the back of the park (toward Chengdu Rd). Here you'll find some 'hidden' gardens with places to sit. Zig-zag through the gardens in this area to ensure you don't miss any of the sculptures.
  • The international exhibition sculptures are often displayed in the area of the park nearest the corner of Beijing/Chengdu Rd.
  • There is a small cafe in the park located near Gate 2, behind the red metal pergola sculpture. The cafe sells coffee, tea, ice cream, toasted sandwiches, fries and other simple snacks.
  • For more substantial food and drink, exit Gate 4 and cross to One Museum Place (Corner of Shanhaiguan/Datian Rd). Here you'll find Starbucks, Manner Coffee, Baker & Spice and inside the building are other more substantial cafes and restaurants.
